BBC Television Seminar

14 October 2004

As part of the BBC Charter Review, Terry Burns, the Government’s independent advisor, convened a number of informed seminars to examine different aspects of the BBC’s role and functions.

As Lord Burns was unable to participate on this occasion, Howard Davies and Tim Gardam - members of his panel of experts - chaired and facilitated on the day. They were joined by heads of BBC television and a number of specialist industry representatives on the top table. The seminar took place in front of a small invited audience made up of members of the public who each responded to our initial consultation earlier this year, and members of the broadcasting industry.

The seminar examined the position and role of BBC television in the current broadcasting ecology, and looked at issues surrounding the future provision of BBC television in a digital age.

The seminar also provided space for discussion about the BBC’s current television output, and examined questions relating to the quality of programming and content across the BBC’s entire television portfolio, including the BBC’s digital channels. The seminar also addressed issues surrounding the role of the BBC as producer, commissioner, and broadcaster of television.
